Spas of America today announced their annual ranking of the Top 50 Canada Spas of 2012, based on consumer behavior on our website.

The Top 50 Canada Spas of 2012 includes: 21 spas from British Columbia; 8 Quebec spas; 14 Ontario spas; 5 Alberta spas; and two spas from Saskatchewan. Compared to 2011, the number of Ontario spas making the list increased by three, Alberta rose by two, Saskatchewan added one, and British Columbia stayed the same. The number of Quebec spas dropped by five.

Spas of America’s Top 50 Canada Spas of 2012 are ranked by unique page views generated by customers visiting the website throughout the year. Spas of America’s global audience is very targeted: 70% women; 80% USA/Canada; 25 to 65 years; $75k to $250k HHI; leisure and business travelers; and health, wellness and lifestyle oriented. On a late winter day, when the mountains beyond downtown Vancouver have been reduced to a memory behind mist and drizzle, I have entered a door to a much warmer place. In the lobby of Miraj Hammam Spa, I immediately catch the scent of citrus and spice that together with elegant arches and brick-colored tiles calls up the warmth of the Middle East. As I sit on an elegant carved wooden bench to wait for the treatment to begin, the calming burble of a fountain set in mosaic tiles cancels out the sound of traffic rushing to and from downtown Vancouver just on the other side of wrought iron-screened windows.

Set in the fashionable Granville Rise district, surrounded by art galleries, antique dealers, designer shopping, and some of Vancouver’s best restaurants and cafes, Miraj Hammam Spa offers a convenient yet exotic escape into the storied tradition of the Turkish bath.

My therapist for the day, Veronica, comes to fetch me and leads me the short distance to the change room, where I am invited to put my street clothes into a locker and don a printed sarong that has been laid out. She then takes me into the adjacent marbled chamber where the Hammam and Gommage treatment will take place.

First, the Hammam, or steam bath. Veronica leads me through the dark, steamy, candlelit room to an even hotter and steamier inner chamber. With a pitcher of cold water for hydration, my task for the next 15 minutes or so is simply to relax and sweat away my cares and toxins. Soon, the walls disappear in the mist and I stretch out on the marble bench, lulled by the intense heat and the sound of splashing water.

All too soon, Veronica comes to guide me back into the outer chamber for the Gommage. This is a full-body scrub and exfoliation with Moroccan black soap, followed by a cleansing rinse at just the perfect temperature and water pressure. I feel like an Egyptian goddess.

Afterward, I am cloaked in a soft spa robe and escorted down the hallway to the lounge. Plush with velvet couches and cushions, it is the perfect place to await an Orientale Massage to lengthen the bliss or to relax after the Hammam and Gommage. In this luxurious setting, I am served sweet cake and fragrant tea on a silver tray, and left simply to enjoy.

This compact spa only serves a handful of clients at a time, so it is wonderfully tranquil environment for relaxation, before heading back out into the city. Men are welcomed on Thursday evenings, or de-stress with your significant other on Sundays.

Spa Industry Gets Back to Their “Roots”

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics celebrates March as National Nutrition Month, with 2013 marking the 40^th anniversary of this educational campaign. As a long standing promoter of healthy living and wellness, spas are focusing on the healthful benefits of utilizing local and sustainable foods within their facilities.

“The number one reason globally that men and women go to a spa is to learn how to manage their stress. We know that in order to lead a life of wellness, one must incorporate a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, so it only makes sense that spas are encouraging a more well-rounded approach to a healthy lifestyle,” said International SPA Association President Lynne McNees.

Jessica Timberlake, spa director of Southern California's Laguna Cliffs Resort & Spa, found farm to table treatments a missing element from high-end spas. “We are incorporating fresh ingredients sourced from VR Green Farms of San Clemente, Calif. into our seasonal body treatments and facials. We are also looking into some cross-branded retail items so our guests can take their spa experience home with them.”

Many spas feel that offering local and whole foods are a part of the mantra of their spa. “Paying tribute to the land and family farming supports our mission of wellness in all we do and setting an example of love and respect for the earth,” said Carla Minskey, communications manager at Sundara Inn & Spa in Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin.

The Umstead Hotel and Spa in Raleigh, N.C. partners with a local, organic, fair trade, coffee company to provide three flavors of coffee to their guests, even creating a flavor named after the hotel.

McNees continued, “ISPA member spas are doing their part within their local communities and are partnering with farms to bring their clients nutrient-rich components as part of their experience and visit to the spa. This is such a natural fit for an industry that has spent decades promoting to the health-conscientious consumer.”

Wellness Resolutions 2013, #9 - Achieve Your Goals

“Goals that are not written down are just wishes." —author unknown

To be successful you need to write down your goals—whatever they may be. Writing down makes your goals more concrete, it helps to set your plan in motion. Keep your goals visible, in your kitchen on your fridge, or better yet - on your bathroom mirror where its the first thing you see in the morning, and the last at night. 


In order to reach your goal, your goal needs to be something you truly want to achieve—a small desire will only bring small results. You ultimately will try harder if it something very important to you. The goal also needs to be planned out into smaller more manageable steps. For example, I will go to the gym one time the first week for 30 minutes, two times the second week for 45 minutes. This will give you small wins along the way and keep you motivated. It all seems very simple. You need to keep positive and you can accomplish any goal that you truly and absolutely want to achieve.

It is important to choose the right bath product, one that is not just fun and relaxing but also therapeutic and formulated to deliver its benefits to your body. You can choose different therapeutic bath products to increase circulation throughout the body; decrease joint pain; provide relief from muscle pain, muscle spasms and cramps; stimulate elimination of toxins from the cells into the bloodstream and through the skin; and stimulate the immune system. Herbal baths are wonderful too: eucalyptus increases clarity and boosts immunity -- good for colds, chamomile soothes dry skin and relaxes, and pine eases sore muscles and joints.

TSA PreCheck Offered to Canadians Enrolled in NEXUS

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is partnering with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) for , an initiative that allows eligible passengers to qualify for expedited screening at participating U.S. airports.

Canadian citizens who are traveling domestically in the United States who are members of NEXUS are now qualified to participate in .

If TSA determines a passenger is eligible for expedited screening through , information is imbedded in the barcode of the passenger's boarding pass. TSA reads the barcode at the designated checkpoint and passengers may be referred to the lane where they will undergo expedited screening, which could include being able to leave their shoes, light outerwear and belt on, allowing them to keep their laptops in their cases and their 3-1-1 compliant liquids/gels bags in their carry-ons.

Passengers do not need to show their CBP Trusted Traveler Cards (NEXUS cards) to use a lane. Members interested in participating in through their NEXUS membership must enter their PASS ID into the ‘Known Traveler’ field when booking a flight reservation or saving their PASS ID to their airline’s frequent flyer profile. Members can find their PASS ID either online through their GOES account or on the back of their membership card in the top-left corner.

When traveling on one of the participating airlines, CBP Trusted Traveler members should remember to provide the airline with their full name, date of birth and PASS ID exactly as it appears in their CBP Trusted Traveler program online account (NEXUS card) to ensure they are properly considered for .

Mirbeau Inn & Spa looks to New England for second location

Upstate New York's Mirbeau Inn & Spa has announced the development of its second location in the United States, and its first foray into New England, with an $18 million, six-acre project in the heart of The Pinehills Village Green.

The original Mirbeau Inn & Spa is located in New York’s Finger Lakes region and is renowned for its gracious hospitality, award-winning dining, and world-class spa services. “Mirbeau is a true retreat,” says Gary Dower, managing director for Mirbeau. “It provides an escape -- a chance to exhale, an opportunity to get away from ‘the everyday,’ to stop, take a breath and just immerse oneself in relaxation.”

Mirbeau at The Pinehills will be joining the growing number of businesses and professional services within The Pinehills Village Green, which is located just 45 miles from Boston and eight miles from Cape Cod.

Architecture for the Inn is reminiscent of an old manor house in the countryside of France, complete with Monet- inspired gardens. The Inn will include 50 rooms, a fine-dining restaurant, wine bar and bistro, world-class spa, fitness area, and accommodations for weddings, corporate meetings, and other social functions. Guest rooms and massage rooms in the spa will all feature warm and inviting fireplaces.

Nestled on top of a knoll, Mirbeau at The Pinehills will overlook spectacular gardens, the Village Green, and Pinehills Golf Club, with the only two five-star public courses in New England designed by Nicklaus Design and Rees Jones.

Mirbeau Inn & Spa at The Pinehills is scheduled to open in the Spring of 2014.

The tremendous growth of adventure and spa tourism in North America was the starting point of the Scandinave Spa concept over 14 years ago.
